The Weirn Books, Vol 1: Be Wary of The Silent Woods follows Ailis and Na’ya who are your average students. They live in the Night Realm where vampires, shifters, weirns, and other night things are on the streets. A shadow seems to be following Ailis and Na’ya around and one of their classmates is not acting like herself. Now Na’ya’s little brother is missing so it is time for them to go to the forbidden mansion in the Silent Woods and find out what exactly is going on.

What I Liked: I was quite intrigued by the title of this book and needed to know what a weirn was, as this was something I had not heard of. I was thrilled to learn about the Night Realm and that a weirn is a witch that has a demon guardian spirit attached to them for life. The astrals were fun to learn about and see their various personalities and how they protected the person that they were attached to.

The art style is distinctive from other graphic novels that I read and I love how there are characteristics that weirns share with each other but there is also variation in each of the character’s designs. I appreciated getting to learn about the various magic spells that are available. Learning about the magic was fascinating, having it spread throughout the action made the book go by quickly and kept my attention on the page the whole time.

Final Verdict: The Weirn Books, Vol 1: Be Wary of The Silent Woods is a fascinating, chilling graphic novel that children ages 8 and up would enjoy. This book is a great one to pick up during the fall months as the time shifts and the world gets a bit eerie. Children will enjoy learning about the Night Real and the various creatures that inhabit this realm.
