In a world where the children of the gods inherit their powers, a descendant of the Greek Fates must solve a series of impossible murders to save her sisters, her soulmate, and her city, for fans of Song of Achilles.

Descendants of the Fates are always born in threes: one to weave, one to draw, and one to cut the threads that connect people to the things they love and to life itself. The Ora sisters are no exception. Io, the youngest, uses her Fate-born abilities as a private investigator in the half-sunken city of Alante.

But her latest job leads her to a horrific discovery: somebody is abducting women, maiming their life-threads, and setting the resulting wraiths loose in the city to kill. To find the culprit, she must work alongside Edei Rhuna, the right hand of the infamous Mob Queen—and the boy with whom she shares a rare fate-thread linking them as soul mates before they’ve even met.

The investigation turns personal when Io's estranged oldest sister shows up on the arm of her best suspect. Amid unveiled secrets from her past and her growing feelings for Edei, Io must follow clues through the city’s darkest corners and unearth a conspiracy that involves some of the city’s most powerful players before destruction comes to her own doorstep.

It has been a long time since I have finished a physical book so fast. There were a lot of things I really enjoyed about this book. The storyline, the pacing, the world. I found it all so fascinating. Lets start with the storyline. Right from the beginning, I was immediately pulled in with Io's investigation. It starts off so strong and I wanted to know what was going on. The little interjections of the past was so important because it really helped defined the relationship between Io, Ava, and Thais. The sisters relationship is pivotal to this story and I thought it was really well developed. Everything moved so well throughout the book. There was never a minute I felt bored or lost. The pacing was set well and moved fast where it was supposed to but also took the time when a little more detail was necessary. And I loved this world. How other-borns have powers that are from old mythology. I absolutely loved this and it worked so well for the book. There was one twist that happened, which I suspected, but then another that I didn't! I love it when that happens.

I adore Io. There was so much of her that just drew me in and was rooting for her the whole time. From the emotional abuse her sister caused her, to finding her own voice, to finding her true family. Io's character was so well developed and I loved how she figured it out as well. How Io knew she was changing and finally doing things for herself that she needed to do. I cannot wait to continue this story and see where it leads.

Overall, Threads That Bind by Kika Hatzopoulou was a definite win for me. I loved the pacing, the story, and the world. This was the first physical book I finished so fast in a long time. It was hard for me to put down when it was time to go to bed! I thought the integration of a future world with mythological powers worked so well with this story. The complexity of the sister's relationship and Io figuring out her trueself really won me over. This whole story blended so well together and I cannot wait for the second book to fall into my lap! I highly recommend this book if you love a mystery, familial bonds, and magic.

Threads That Bind is a fantasy/mystery involving a magic system in which some of the characters (the Other-born) are descended from Greek gods and share their powers. Io and her sisters are descended from the Fates; she is a Cutter who can see and cut the Threads between people, things and places. The story also incorporates romance, humor, politics, gangs and family dynamics.
The world building and magic system are detailed, complex, original, vivid and fascinating. There are fantastic action scenes, a strong, determined heroine, an atmospheric post-apocalyptic city which floods intermittently, a large, interesting cast of characters and shocking twists. Threads That Bind was a fun, captivating read but could sometimes be confusing because there was so much going on. The ending leaves the reader with many questions but happily, there is a sequel. Thank you to BookishFirst and PenguinTeen for an ARC to review.
