Perhaps you take the bus to school or ride in a car. But imagine traveling to school on your family's horse and cart or paddling to school in a canoe. This book explores the many different ways in which children and their families travel during their everyday lives.
  • Discover what it's like to ride to school in a tiny rickshaw bus in India that's powered by the driver riding a bike or pulling the bus on foot!
  • Join a family of Sami reindeer herders who travel from A to B on snowmobiles.
  • Ride on the world's fastest train in China or zoom across the snow in Greenland on a sled pulled by powerful dogs.
  • The book includes a world map that pinpoints where every story comes from.
Supported with stunning, detailed photos, this book is an engaging nonfiction read and a fascinating exploration of transportation around the world.

There are so many interesting and exciting ways to travel that it's too bad most people in the US rely on boring old cars! From reindeer in Mongolia to rickshaws in India, there are many fascinating ways to travel, and this book introduces young readers to many of them.

Having just read Àlàbá Ònájìn's graphic novel, The Case of the Missing Kolo, I knew that people traveled in canoes in Nigeria, but it was fascinating to read that since the fathers fish at night, the children have canoes available to go to school in the morning. I was unaware that reindeer herders in Norway now use snowmobiles, but that makes sense, doesn't it?

There were tons of fun facts, like the name of the color of all school buses in the US: National School Bus Glossy Yellow and the statistic that sled dogs can pull one and a half times their weight over snow and ice. This will be very helpful if I am ever planning on mushing anywhere.
Good Points
Lawrence's brief text is accompanied by photoillustrations that show what donkey carts in Botswana or Australian medical planes look like. There's also a great picture of a "walking bus" in England; since I walk to school, I think it's a great idea to encourage students to walk by having groups collect children on their way to school buildings!

Transportation is a fascinating topic, and its one that appeals to many young readers who are fans of nonfiction. After reading this, hand transportation buffs Adams and Jay's On Track: The Remarkable Story of How Trains Have Changed Our World, Ralphs' Transported: 50 Vehicles That Changed the World, Sodomka's Means of Transport That Almost Changed the World, Oxlade and Lemanski's Planes, Trains, and Automobiles: A Visual History of Modern Transportation Featuring 100 Iconic Designs, Kirkfield and Ford's From Here to There: Inventions That Changed the Way the World Moves.
