"Our leaves rustle, Our roots whisper. If you were a tree, what would you whisper to me?" Mandy Ross has been listening closely to the trees, from the willow to the eucalyptus, and the sycamore to the oak. These fascinating poems, beautifully illustrated by Juliana Oakley, imagine the songs they are singing to us and the verses they speak. With a strong environmental message, the book awakens us to the rich, unique and irreplaceable biodiversity of tree life and the many species that depend on it - including ourselves.

TREE WHISPERS is a collection of poetry about trees that celebrates nature. The book features many individual poems connected by the theme of trees. The book even includes one poem spoken by a tree in sounds (but interpreted into English below). Illustrations appear on each page.
What I loved: There is a great diversity of poems throughout the book and this will do a great job of introducing and inspiring young readers. The theme of trees ends up feeling quite broad with so many different topics. Throughout, there is educational tidbits about trees, types, leaves, and so on, which adds to the learning. Some of the illustrations are quite stunning and detailed, and they definitely add to the visual interest of the book as children can look while they listen. Diverse characters and nature scenes add to the beauty.
These are poems that each stand-alone, so the book can be read as a whole or in part, which will work best for older readers who can enjoy it piecemeal. The poetry captures so many topics that it feels quite comprehensive.
Final verdict: TREE WHISPERS is a lovely collection of poetry about trees that will capture the imagination of young readers.

Tree Whispers: A Forest of Poems has made a great addition to our homeschool library!
The poems are fun and lyrical, while also being informative! The poems are written both in rhyming and free verse, and would be a great reference for any level of poetry study.
The subjects, while all revolving around trees, range in subject from odes to the diversity of the forest, to rhythmic conversations between trees, to snapshots of cultural traditions surrounded by trees.
I loved that the author shines a light on the diverse populace of trees, as well as the world full of a multitude of unique humans!
The illustrator showcased these differences beautifully. From leafy oak trees to changing sycamores. The representation in this children's book is great. Inclusive featuring people with a wide array of skin colors, hair styles, body differences and traditions.
Our favorite poem had to be Tree's Storm Song. It was super fun to read aloud with the children, and the added translation was beautiful.
