I adore Fitzpatrick's writing so I anticipated loving What I Thought Was True--what I didn't expect was how much I want my teenage boys to read this book in order to better understand the complexities that young ladies and men experience when navigating sexuality, desire, confidence, slut shaming, expectations, mistakes, privilege, responsibility and love. The truth is that all of these emotions and experiences are usually knotted together in unique ways inside each and every teenager. I thought Fitzpatrick expertly and realistically shined a light on how easy it is to get all tangled up inside and how much easier it is to unravel the hard things when you don't do it alone.
