An imaginative story with a unique world.
The Story:
Sable is a witch who harbors fate inside her and does his bidding - which usually means hunting criminals and hanging them. Until fate decides she must save the prince’s life. After reading that his future consists of an assassination attempt, Sable is invited to take place in Tauren’s bride search with twelve other contestants. She isn’t there to marry the prince, only to protect him.
But fate and her heart have other plans.
What I loved:
Sable and Tauren are fantastic characters, both strong in their own right. I’m always drawn to characters willing to sacrifice themselves for the person they love and these two embody that.
This world of thirteen sectors is fun and unique while also being familiar and comfortable. It’s easy to get drawn into it. The writing flows easily and is a pleasure to follow.
What was just okay:
There’s a bit of insta-love that is slightly off-putting but you get over it quickly as the relationship develops into something endearing. I wish the entire book held more of the darkness that existed in the beginning. The scene of Sable hunting for the murderer was my favorite but she changed when she left The Gallows, becoming more girly and less dark.
Final Verdict:
A binge-worthy story that is hard to look away from with strong characters, and a fun plot.
