A hard-earned shield. Days before she is to take her place as a shield maiden, like her mother before her, two deaths alter the course of Liv’s future. One belonged to a witch who called her by name, the other a chieftain from the north. Vengeance for the chieftain’s death comes in a wild fury that burns her village and slaughters her family. Left for dead, Liv pleads to Skuld – norn and weaver of the future – to spare her. A deal is struck that will endow her with the dark magic needed to claim her vengeance. But this power comes at an unfathomable price… Ink made from the ashes of loved ones. After his home is attacked, Calder races to warn neighboring villages of the threat. Little does he know he’s traveling into the path of fate that will lead him straight to Liv. Despite being broken, angry, and overwhelmed by power she cannot contain, it’s her willingness to defend others that draws Calder to her. Armor forged from the bones of those she held dear. Together, Liv and Calder discover they are two sides of the same sharpened blade. Rising from the heartache and fury in their pasts, they see a future together worth fighting for. With their strengths and hearts combined, can they become a force powerful enough to defeat the fleet of darkness coming for them? Or will the thread of fate that binds them unravel?

The story:
A Viking, Liv has earned her shield and is set to take her place as a shield maiden when two deaths set off a chain of events that will change Liv’s life forever. When Fenris Wolf arrives in her village to revenge the death of his father he cut’s Liv down and leaves her for dead. Desperate she calls to the gods, and Skuld, weaver of the future, answers her pleas. With the help of Skulds magic Liv sets forth to avenge her loved ones and village.

What I loved:
I really enjoyed the characters, the relationship that slowly built between Liv and Calder and also the father/daughter bond she developed with Calder’s father. I also enjoyed the Norse mythology and it’s been a long time since I’ve read a story about Vikings and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

What was just okay:
There were places where the pacing of the story slowed right down for a longer than I would’ve liked, but all in all it was an enjoyable read with a strong female lead.

Final Verdict:
This story was filled with heart and was highly entertaining.
Good Points
Well-developed characters
Interesting plot

For those who can't get enough of Vikings, Norse Mythology, and kick-butt female leads, this one is for you.

This was my first leap into a Casey L. Bond novel and her writing didn't disappoint! Strong, effortless, and ensnaring from the first page.

Liv is just about to take her place as a shieldmaiden in her village, but two deaths occur days before and it changes the course of everyone's life, and death. Falling in battle, Liv strikes a deal with Skuld and she's allowed to live as long as she doesn't break the deal with the goddess. Along the way she meets Calder, and a few other characters as well, who strengthen and aid her cause to fulfill her destiny.

The writing, as I said, superb! But what I had a difficult time with was the pacing, it started off with a quick boil, then simmered the rest of the way. There is romance, but it certainly doesn't take the front seat, and at times seems a little superficial.

All in all, it's a solid read.
Good Points
A solid, kick-butt female lead in an epic world
