Ashleigh -- the original heroine of the very first Thoroughbred title -- has long been a reader favorite, as evidenced by thousands of fan letters. In this prequel, she's an 11-year-old growing up at Edgardale, the breeding farm her parents run. While the current Thoroughbred series features Ashleigh as an adult jockey with a daughter of her own, the Ashleigh series will provide the inside story of her childhood that fans have been waiting for. The Ashleigh books will be written by Joanna Campbell, creator of the original Thoroughbreds.

Lightnings Last Hope is basically about Ashleigh and her friend, Mona. They go off riding on their horses and find an abandoned horse, which they named Lightning. He is in a dilapidated state and they must do everything they can do to save her.

I partially enjoyed Lightnings Last Hope. It was rather easy for me, but enjoyable. I think I liked when they helped Lightning. I recommend this book for girls 10 and up. I give it 3 stars for an interesting story line. Try other Thoroughbred books and perhaps the Song of the Lioness books by Tamora Pierce for further storylines like this!
