A mysterious library book opens the door to a world of magic and danger in the first book in the beloved Young Wizards series.

Bullied by her classmates, Nita Callahan is miserable at school. So when she finds a mysterious book in the library that promises her the chance to become a wizard, she jumps at the opportunity to escape her unhappy reality. But taking the Wizard's Oath is no easy thing, and Nita soon finds herself paired with fellow wizard-in-training Kit Rodriguez on a dangerous mission. The only way to become a full wizard is to face the Lone Power, the being that created death and is the mortal enemy of all wizards. As Nita and Kit battle their way through a deadly alternate version of New York controlled by the Lone Power, they must rely on each other and their newfound wizarding skills to survive--and save the world from the Lone One's grasp.

I can barely remember what happened in this book. When I was reading it, it just felt like a copy of every other magic or fantasy book. No originality and no imagination. I could name so many other books that are so much greater than this one.

This is an imaginative, well written tale about a young girl, Nita, and how she manages to solve all her problems, (well, most of them anyway). She was hiding out in the library, when a secretive little book catches her eye, "So You Want to Be a Wizard." She then checks it out, and realizes that there is a LOT of work to be done on or for the planet, which has to be saved more often then you would think! It takes the work of all 16 million wizards in practice to keep our planet in check, and that's only on Earth. Read this exciting coming-of-age story anytime you want; you'll be able to relate to it, especially if you like to read!

I really like Fred, and I think it's really cool that this is sort of a mixture between fantasy and science fiction. However, I think Diane Duane is very unimaginative at parts. Other worlds probably wouldn't have cars, and if they did, they wouldn't be at all like ours. If by some small chance they had cars like ours, they couldn't possibly have a Manhattan too. It's a fun book, and a fun series, but I really don't think it's Diane Duane's best.

Nita is always being bullied by a girl and her cronies. One day she ducks into the library to hide from the bullies and finds a mysterious book called So You Want to Be a Wizard. At first she thinks, Whatever, it's probably a just for fun book, but soon she gets proved wrong. She finds out that magic is quite real and it's not just waving around a stick and yelling nonsense. Instead, she finds herself in a battle between the forces of good and evil. She also makes friends with another amateur wizard called Kit.

I thught that this was a pretty good book. The characters were well developed and the plot didn't run around in circles.

This is the first in eight (so far) of the Young Wizards series by Diane Duane. A girl called Nita who is bullied by people at school goes into her local library for refuge and there she finds something that will change her life forever..... a book. But not just any book, this is a book that could make her..... a wizard! It sounds fantastical and highly unreal but Nita takes "the Oath". Wizardry, though is not what some books would have you believe. A flick of a wand and pow! Magic!

Not quite :D It turns out that wizardry is a lot more difficult and entails a lot of hard work. Not to say wizards don't have fun! When Nita is trying out her new found powers she meets a boy who is also a wizard, Christopher Rodriguez but call him Kit. Now as the manual detailed in the introduction before becoming a proper wizard you must undertake an ordeal of sorts. I want to say more but I'm afraid I'll give to much away.

Interested? Then read the series, they're great!!

This is the first book in the "Young Wizards" series, in which Nita finds out about wizardry, decides to be one, and accepts the consequences. She becomes a friend with another new wizard. Together they learn a lot, and take their Ordeal of Wizardry. Together they learn that wizardry works.. and that no growth is without loss and pain - but it is worth it...
Excellent. I highly recommend this series.
