Without his job at the hospital, Clay would be lost. The hard work, the struggles of the patients, the drama in the ERÑit makes his days worth something, and gives focus to his dream of someday becoming a doctor. Clay can't afford to go away to college like the rest of his graduating senior class, but what other 17-year-old has delivered a baby or helped save a life? Still, Clay wishes his life could be more like his best friend Joey's. Joey has it all—a great family, a good college waiting for him at the end of the summer, money, a car. Clay has to bike everywhere, and the miles are starting to wear him down. But Joey's golden future shatters one day when he overdoses at a party. Now he's clinging to life at the hospital where Clay works, and Clay may even be implicated in Joey's injuries. Tension and emotion rise as those who love Joey gather and wait. Clay will do whatever he can to find out what happened at the party, and to help Joey recover. But to survive this ordeal Clay must draw on a strength he never knew he had.

I had never read a book in verse before and I was intrigued by this
one. The idea was not very original and it was kind of boring but
basically it was ok.

Tessa in the beginning was very stuck up
and selfish in my opinion but I guess that was the point and thats why
she had to reevaluate her life. Also drill bit guy (I dont think they
mention his name) was very flaky and strange and seemed to have a
bigger part in the book than he actually did. Very confusing

This book was ok but I would only read it again if I had nothing else to read.

Clay Gardener is nothing better than a speck of dirt. He is worthless. He knows thats what everyone thinks of him, because thats what he thinks of himself. When hes working at the hospital though, he becomes useful doing all the things no one else wants to do. He mops floors, cleans up blood, transports patients, and anything else, as ordered. He is thorough and efficient where others are clumsy and lazy.

Clay wants nothing more than to be a doctor. Its more likely that his best friend, Joey, will be the one to become a doctor, though. Joeys headed to Duke in the fall, and hes got parents who care about him and a future thats bright. Clay knows hes lucky to be Joeys friend.

When Joey becomes unexpectedly and uncharacteristically violent, Clay is forced to protect himself, and now Joeys lying in a hospital bed fighting for his life. It was bad enough Clay had no future, now everyone despises him for ruining Joeys.

This book is character-driven, and Harazin steers well. My heart ached for Clay. I kept waiting, hoping, and praying for the moment that this kid would snap out of it and realize he was more than a waste of space. His unique voice was strong and consistent throughout the book, and by the fast-paced ending, I found myself enthralled. Id love to see more work by this author!
