Sorcery in the Alleys

Every now and then, a book comes along that reaffirms one's faith in the power of storytelling. Such a book is Sorcery in the Alleys. Marise Ghorayeb's first outing as an author proves to be a delightful tale of wit and magic, no less stirring than our dreams that give our lives meaning.

Elizabeth is a street-smart girl who is forced to deal with the premature death of her parents while being given the unenviable responsibility of protecting the universe from malevolent interdimensional wizards. Her role as savior of the universe is only topped by the challenge of trying to cope with the daily pressures of being a teenager and the social challenges that accompany growing up. To make matters worse, Elizabeth holds herself responsible for the death of her parents and the trials her family faces because of it. This is no walk in the park for your average teenager!

Elizabeth's secret life as a "Dark" magician constantly puts her at odds with her normal life and leaves her clueless friends and family members scrambling to help her through her mysterious problems.

With all the space-operatic intrigue and interplanetary magical warfare going on, it's important to note that Sorcery in the Alleys is really a story about growing up. Some people might notice a vague similarity to Harry Potter. But this novel, more than Harry Potter, gives readers a chance to explore a larger universe where everything and everyone is connected and the future is decided by our actions more so than magic.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a well-told story and a heavy dose of teen angst. Bring on the sequel.
