Claire Randall has returned to the twentieth century and raised her daughter Brianna to womanhood. Brianna believes she is the daughter of Claire's twentieth century husband, Frank, though she was, in fact, fathered by the man Claire married when she travelled back in time to the 1740s- Jamie Fraser. Brianna never knew Jamie, and Claire knows that she idolizes the man she considers her father, but she wants Brianna to know the truth of her heritage, so she brings her to Scotland with the intent of telling her everything, though this turns out to be more painful than Claire could have imagined.

I read my first Diana Gabaldon book by chance. It was in the middle of the series (I think it was Drums of Autumn, but I'm not sure) and I picked it up because it looked good, which it was, but I was a little lost because it didn't exactly stand alone. About a year later, I decided to go back and read the others.

Diana Gabaldon's books are often marketed as romance, but they tended tend to be more appreciated by people, like me, who love history- reading them is like walking through a perfect museum.
