Release Date: February 19, 2013

From author Michael Hassan comes CRASH AND BURN (Balzer + Bray; 9780062112903; February 19, 2013; Ages 14 and up; $18.99), a powerful, emotional knockout of a debut novel about the complicated relationship between a profoundly-troubled teenager who takes his school hostage at gunpoint and the profoundly untroubled student who stops him.

On April 21, 2008, Steven “Crash” Crashinsky saved over a thousand people when he stopped his classmate David Burnett from taking their high school hostage armed with assault weapons and high powered explosives. You likely already know what came after for Crash: the nationwide notoriety, the college recruitment, and, of course, the book deal. What you might not know is what came before: a story of two teens whose lives have been inextricably linked since grade school, who were destined, some say, to meet that day in the teachers’ lounge of Meadows High.  And what you definitely don’t know are the words that Burn whispered to Crash right as the siege was ending, a secret that Crash has never revealed.

Until now.

Michael Hassan’s shattering novel is a tale of first love and first hate, the story of two high school seniors and the morning that changed their lives forever. It’s a portrait of the modern American teenage male, in all his brash, disillusioned, oversexed, schizophrenic, drunk, nihilistic, hopeful, ADD-diagnosed glory. And it’s a powerful meditation on how normal it is to be screwed up, and how screwed up it is to be normal.

“Sprawling, messy, vulgar, sexy, irreverent, violent, bighearted, harrowing. These are just a few of the many adjectives about to be hurled in the direction of this roaring freight train of a debut… Gutsily conceived, written, and edited, this is, quite simply, a great American novel.” — Booklist, Starred Review

“[Crash and Burn] is a must-read for teens and adults alike who want to understand the lack of empathy that permeates contemporary culture; it offers no answers, but the mirror it does present may be chilling enough to awaken readers to the costs of not getting it right.”  — Bulletin of the Center for Children’s Books (starred review)

“Hassan effectively conveys the numbing influence of drugs and alcohol on Steven’s life and the messy social relationships of young adulthood, with a tone that blends ennui with an undercurrent of aggression.”  — Publishers Weekly

I find it interesting because its something I haven’t really read about before..

  2. Kate says:

Honestly, I think it sounds interesting because it’s a “portrait of the modern American teenage male” and many YA books don’t focus on them enough. Since I’m a girl, it’s interesting to get a male’s perspective on life. Because of the 2 male main characters, I think we’ll learn about them and why this event happened.

  3. Kary says:

I think it sounds interesting because it kind of goes along with all the school violence that has been happening in the last few years. I work in a junior high and middle school, so this topic interests me.

  4. MrsErica Beaton says:

I think what interests me about this book is the social action piece. Namely, that we are all players in life and our actions can have dramatic effects.

  5. Viviana Ortiz says:

I think I’m interested in this book because it’s fresh and I like to know the perspective of guys about life

  6. Vivien says:

I love reading books from a male pov. It’s so refreshing.

  7. G Donald Cribbs says:

This reminds me of several books I’ve read recently, and some awhile back. I think I’d really like to read this one. Maybe THE ASTONISHING ADVENTURES OF FANBOY AND GOTH GIRL, and ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE MEANING OF THE UNIVERSE. Sounds intriguing, and high stakes. WIN.

  8. Tammy says:

The last book I read that was related to this was Jennifer Brown’s Hate List and I really liked that book.

I’m interested in the male perspective and the friendship between the two, as well as how the author portrays something that has been plaguing schools in the US.

  16. Jennifer Christensen says:

It’s interesting because there aren’t many books out there that touch on the subject of school shootings, hold ups, etc. If will definitely be interesting to see how Crash feels about stopping David.

  17. Karyn says:

I find most interesting that it takes such a serious topic, but things that are real and relevant to the YA reader. It sounds like a gripping, compelling read.
