Many of us are familiar with the story of The Runaway Pancake; this is a fun and contemporary retelling of that classic story. In this book, Dad makes a delicious-looking pancake, and all of the kids want some, but the pancake decides that it will not be eaten soon. The pancake flies out of the pan and runs after proclaiming that no one will eat it since it is too fast. Will someone be able to catch this runaway pancake?
What I liked: This book opens with a family eager to eat this beautiful pancake, but takes a fun spin as the pancake leaps out of the pan and goes on an adventure to avoid ending up in anyone’s stomach. The repetition of the pancake words makes it easy for children to remember just what is happening in the story and the goal of the pancake. This book does a great job of showing how fast doesn’t always mean clever and that fast isn’t always the best way to do things. This message is showcased as the pancake ultimately gets defeated by a clever animal. The illustrations throughout this book are lively and playful, making for an enjoyable and engaging read.
Final Verdict: The Runaway Pancake is a silly and fun retelling of a beloved classic that would be great to share with children ages 3 and up. Adults will enjoy revisiting this story, and children will laugh as the pancake manages to escape everyone trying to just grab a bite of it.
