THE PUP DAYS OF SUMMER is a delightful new adventure for Cloud Puppy and friends. Going into summer, Cloud Puppy is sad that she and her friends won’t have as much time together due to vacations and camps. However, she has an idea… when they are all back, they should go to Coral Orchard Floating Island Festival, a seasonal festival that is off the coast of their town with cool rides and roller coasters. However, once it comes time to ride the big roller coaster, Cloud Puppy is feeling very nervous! She must navigate this feeling with her friends to be able to enjoy the festival.
What I loved: This is a very colorful and relatable graphic novel. Trying new things is an experience all children will be able to understand – and the nerves and fears that come with it. The big roller coaster is a scary thing, especially when she has not done it before. Her nerves and fears come through the story easily, and readers will be able to see the expression on her face and the way she handles this in front of her friends.
Luckily, her friends know how to support and comfort Cloud Puppy, understanding and appreciating her limits, plus allowing her to sit out if she needs to. She learns that she doesn’t need to hide her fear or push through it to make her friends happy, a lesson that will be well-received by young readers. Kindness and support go a long way!
The illustrations are fantastic with lots of color and expressive characters that capture each scene well. The text is clear and easily attributable in speech bubbles, making it easy to follow. This works well for advancing independent readers and young middle grade readers, who can also relate to the characters and story.
Final verdict: THE PUP DAYS OF SUMMER is a relatable and entertaining graphic novel that will work well for older independent readers and young MG readers who will also enjoy the themes of friendship and summer!
