A Gift from Daniel is a sweet and simple early reader that I often use when teaching kids how to read. Whether you are an educator or a parent, it’s perfect for helping young children start recognizing words while enjoying a charming story about friendship and giving.

The story follows Daniel Tiger and his friend Miss Elaina. They are playing together when Miss Elaina tells Daniel she has a gift for him. Daniel wants to give her a gift too, but isn’t sure what to do. With help from his mom, he decides to make a homemade paper trolley for Miss Elaina, and she absolutely loves it. The book wraps up with a gentle message that gifts made with care and from the heart are extra special.

What I like most is that the book is simple, repetitive, and uses large, clear text that makes it easy for early readers to follow along. The colorful illustrations from the show help hold children’s attention and connect them to familiar characters. Even kids who are just starting to recognize words can participate, which makes it a great choice for reading aloud or practicing early literacy skills. Overall, A Gift from Daniel is not only a fun story about friendship and giving, but it’s also a very practical tool for helping preschoolers build confidence with reading without stressing them out.
