Amazing Grapes follows Curly and Perlie who have been transported to the Lost Dimension. They are then joined by their older sister Shirley and their very special Mommy. Come along and see the various adventures that await this family in this weird dimension.
What I Liked: I was drawn to this book because the art style reminded me of a Ronald Dahl book and I was hopeful that it would read like one. I was quite pleased with what I found throughout the book as it was at times humorous and then silly and at times it got existential.
I enjoyed getting to learn about the various parts of this weird dimension such as Trotamania, Euphoria, and Feartopia. I also enjoyed the various characters and creatures that are introduced throughout the book and how imaginative they are. I especially enjoyed Muckity Muck and the two headed swan. I found the bickering between these characters with Curly and Perlie was hilarious and I couldn’t get enough of their silliness.
What Left Me Wanting More: There were several moments throughout this book that I lost the plot of the story and was confused as to where this book was going. During these moments I had to put the book down and it was difficult to find the motivation to pick it back up. For a while there I was questioning if there was a plot to this book or if it was just various adventures throughout this weird dimension so I was happy when the very special Mommy appeared and we learned her role in this dimension.
Final Verdict: Amazing Grapes is a silly graphic novel about traveling to another dimension and the various antics that the family gets into in that dimension. This book is great for children ages 10 and up who enjoy slice-of-life books and books that are more experimental than plot-driven.
