I’m pretty sure everyone has known one of those kids who turns everything into a competition. "Bijan Always Wins" tackles this common childhood stage with such warmth and understanding that I found myself nodding along with every page.
The story follows Bijan, whose need to win at absolutely everything starts affecting his friendships. What makes this book stand out is how authentically it captures the emotional journey. We're not just told that winning isn't everything - we watch Bijan slowly realize how his behavior impacts others. The story validates that natural desire to succeed while gently showing there's more to life than being first.
I especially appreciate how the book approaches this tricky topic without making Bijan feel like a "bad kid." Instead, it shows his growth as he learns to balance his competitive spirit with being a good friend. The diverse cast of characters and soft, appealing artwork create an inclusive environment that helps young readers see themselves in the story.
Being a librarian myself, I like to keep mental lists of books on different topics so that I am ready when a parent, teacher, or even kids asks for recommendations. "Bijan Always Wins" joined that mental list as soon as I read it, and I will be recommending it to anyone who asks for stories about friendship or being too competitive.
