Dear Math, We're Not Friends

Nikhil hates maths. He gets anxiety when he thinks about it and will do anything to get out of it. When his teacher persuades him to write to maths to try and work out why he feels the way he does, he soon learns that maths is in most things we do and it can be very helpful.
What I Liked: As someone who has dyscalculia and did not find out until adulthood, this book would have been great to read as a child. I hated maths and I was always made to feel stupid for asking for clarification, which left me with a hatred for maths. This book shows that it is important to express those emotions, but at the same time, it is also important for teachers to be more supportive of children. It showed that maths is a part of most things and knowing at least the basics can be really helpful. It also makes it sound fun to learn about it.
What Left Me Wantiing More: Nothing really. I enjoyed the book and I thought the illustratons were great. I liked how each of the activities Nikhil took part in needed maths and how we get to see him gradually learn to love the subject.
Final Verdict: A very positive and well written book that will benefit kids a lot if they hate maths. Nikhil is encouraged to enjoy it by showing him how it is used every day. I would definitely recommend this book, it is written with understanding and that is key in dealing with children.
