Demonglass (Hex Hall #2)
User reviews
You guys, Rachel Hawkins knows how to write a book.
I honestly don’t know how everyone was able to wait for Spell Bound after that one. I’m extremely glad I only have to wait until it comes in at the library for me!
I don’t want to get into the story itself too much so I don’t spoil you for Hex Hall, but I can still talk about the characters. Sophie is back and just as sarcastic as I ever which I loved. I love that her sarcasm doesn’t make her seem cynical. Not that I can’t appreciate a cynical character, it’s just a nice change.
Cal was so sweet and caring it was impossible not to feel sorry for him (more on that later).
Archer. Yeah. This guy is awesome. He’s sarcastic and snarky and yet still so sweet. He’s just so…*sigh*
I liked that Sophie learns more about controlling her powers and just how important they are to her and the paranormal world. Some unexpected villains arise in this book and you even get to see Archer for a bit, and oh, do those little bits make you want more! Rachel is such a tease!
Demonglass was a great sequel to a fun and interesting series. I love that it wasn’t just fluff, like some tend to be, and really had a story behind it and a purpose in the overall scheme. If you loved the Hex Hall, you’ll devour this one. I can’t wait to read Spell Bound!
Alright, so if you're still reading this, I'm assuming that you've read Hex Hall. As we all know, at the end of Hex Hall, Sophie announces that she wants to go through The Removal to get read of her powers after having to kill her great-grandmother, Alice, with a shard of Demon Glass. She's scared that she'll go psycho like Alice and Lucy, her grandmother. So in Demon Glass, it's nearing the end of the school year. Sophie's father, Head of the Council, shows up at Hex Hall to talk to Sophie about going through the removal. He makes a deal with her: If she spends the summer with him in England then he'll allow her to go through the removal. Of course, as any loving father would, he tries to change her mind through the whole trip. Will she go through with it after all?
Now, I absolutely loved the first book. I've seen reviews and ratings for Demon Glass and was wondering what exactly was missing for people to give it 2 stars. I personally loved this book a little more than the first. Rarely do I find a sequel that is even equally enjoyable to the first. This book was riveting, had me at the edge of my seat, and I even cried a few times. It is a great addition to the series and I cannot wait to read the next book!
Everything I loved about HEX HALL I loved even more in DEMONGLASS.
The cliffhanger at the end killed me a little.
Sophie is one of my all time favorite characters (so much so I named my little girl sophia!) and I enjoyed reading about her developing relationship with her father who turned out to be not as bad as we all thought!!!
The book is set in London for the most part (big ups for the homeland) Ms Hawkins did this beautifully. She didn't over do the story with needless facts like some authors like to do.
I love love love the star crossed lover mess with Archer (I totally see why shes into him) and we get to find out more about his past.
Bring on book 3 because I have a feeling Soph's mom and dad where something of Star crossed loves in the past!!!! EXCITING. So rooting for the parental units
I didn't think I could possibly like Cal as much as I do but my heart goes out to him, I genuinely hope something good is in the works for him.
I want to talk about everything in the book but I don't want to spoil it for anybody! but it is totally awesome :)
We learn about Archers past
Its very funny and witty
its full of personality
If you read my review for Hex Hall you would know that I was not to ecstatic about the outcome. I had high hopes for it since so many people had blogged about how great it was but the novel fell short for me. Don't get me wrong, it was still a very fun and quick read but was nothing compared to Demonglass. Although, now looking back on my Hex Hall experience, I can say that the first book did provide an excellent foundation for the series.
I was left in complete awe as secrets were being let out of the bag left, right, and centre. The first book felt very predictable to me but that was so not the case with the second. Hawkins shrouded Demonglass in mystery which had me flipping the pages to know more. Yes, there may have been paper-cuts involved. Aspects of the novel that you thought were far from significant turned out to play a somewhat important part of the overall telling of the story.
All the characters are back for round II with a few more thrown in for good measure. Of course, Demonglass would be nothing without Sophie. She is finally starting to come into her own and step up to the plate all while maintaing that sarcastic way of hers. She exudes a quick wit that I find extremely hilarious. Once again, Hawkins had me laughing out loud.
Like any good writer these days, Hawkins has decided to give us a love triangle. Sophie is not rash with her decisions and sometimes I didn't even know which way her heart was leaning. Hawkins was able to create that torn and confused feeling within the reader that Sophie experiences throughout the majority of the book. Obviously Sophie has more feelings for one than the other, which is generally always the case with real love triangles, but she mostly uses logic to help guide her in her decision making rather than pure emotion. I admire Sophie since she knows what is right and what is wrong and she takes her current situation in perspective when making a choice as to who to choose.
And what was with that ending? It was as if Hawkins placed a bowl of candy in front of the reader and before they could take one morsael it is snatched away. Demonglass leaves you craving for more. I have no theories as to what will happen in the third installment but one thing is for sure, I will be camping out by my bookstore waiting for it to hit the shelf.
We meet Sophie Mercer, right where Hex Hall left off, struggling with the knowledge of being a demon. Sophie is determined more than ever to go through with the Removal, a process that removes your powers with the risk of death. Her dad, the head of the Council and fellow demon, finally comes to Sophie. He invites her back to London to live with him for a couple of months, along with Jenna and Cal. Sophie eagerly agrees since Archer was last spotted in London. Upon her arrival, Sophie meets two other demons and a whole lot of mystery. Who made them and why?
Demonglass introduces new characters: Nick, Daisy and Sophie's dad. The setting change is drastic from Hex Hall to the head quarters of Council. Jenna and Cal come along with Sophie to London. I liked Cal's character, but I thought his feelings for Sophie were kind of random since he barely talked to her in the first book. The whole book is building up towards the ending which is fantastic, but leaves us with a pesky cliff-hanger. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
Demonglass became the book I was more excited/anxious to read. Hex Hall was amazing, which made the expectations for Demonglass perhaps higher, and it did not disappoint.
I still love all of the things I loved about Hex hall. Sophie's witty and sarcastic remarks, her friendship with Archer, and their little arguments are some of the little things that make the book so good.
"Bad Dog".
We learn more about Cal, the school's Ground keeper, for instance that he is betrothed to Shophie, and she was one of the reasons he stayed at Hex Hall after he turned 18.
Jenna wasn't present for much of the book, but we got to meet Daisy and Nick, both of whom I actually liked.
Rachel does not drag on and on the story as many do, which gives it the right pace and enough suspense to have you on edge.
