6th grader Bea is having a hard time. I love that she is in a school of witches by accident, and now it's time for Halloween. There are decorations and tasks to be completed.
The book is set up in short chapters with diary entries written in the first person, and to add to the humor and connections, she corrects them. Bea is a fun character who is trying to fit in somewhere she doesn't belong but is trying to make the best of it in any way she can and keeping the newfound magic she learned from her dad. The illustrations included in the diary entries add to the overall feeling that reading can be fun and that there are different styles of books to read.

Halloween Ball by Cargill continues Bea Black’s story in a way that feels both fun and a little stressful in a good way.

Bea is still stuck at witch school even though she doesn’t really want to be there, and now she has to help plan the Halloween Ball, which is a huge deal. I liked how the book shows her trying to come up with ideas while also worrying about her magic and keeping it secret from her dad. It makes the story feel more real because she is juggling a lot at once, just like a normal kid would, except with magic added in.

The diary format really works well in this book. It makes everything feel personal, like you are inside Bea’s head hearing her honest thoughts, mistakes, and little jokes. I especially liked how she sometimes corrects herself or reacts to what she just wrote, because it makes her feel natural and not perfect. The illustrations also helped break up the text and made the story more engaging. They added to the humor and made certain moments stand out more, especially during the Halloween Ball planning.

Personally, I think the best part of the book is Bea herself. She can be unsure, a little stubborn, and sometimes overwhelmed, but she keeps trying anyway. That made me root for her more. I also liked how the story focuses on finding where you belong, even if it’s not where you expected to be. The mix of school drama, friendship, and magic keeps it interesting without being too complicated. Overall, it’s an enjoyable and easy read that feels cozy but still has enough excitement to keep you turning the pages.

This belongs to the Diary of an Accidental Witch which is a hilarious chapter book collection black and white illustrated with creativity and humor. It adds a lot of extra to the text and makes reading fun.
6th grader Bea is having a hard time I love that she is in a school of witches by accident and now it's time for Halloween, there are decorations and tasks to be completed.
We get the diary entries (first person) as a countdown to the Halloween ball and her wish to be transferred to a non-witch school before Halloween. She thinks she has no friends and that all goes wrong. I love that she writes entries with words that she then corrects, making them funnier. It's a journey of acceptance, making friends, self-discovery, and finding a place to belong.
Sometimes things are not what they seem... like a frog Halloween costume.
I find this series motivating for those who are reluctant to read. The diary entries and the awesome design of the pages with the funny letters, announcements, news, and notes help.
Good Points
Great for the season but also for reluctant readers
Fun and with great characters
