In this beautifully illustrated book, a little duckling refuses to stop trying to befriend a cat and insists on calling the cat "duck." Young readers will be amused as they will immediately be "in" on the fact that the duckling is mistaking the cat for a fellow duck. The rhyme is smooth and easy to read. The lesson the book is trying to teach is that labels aren't important enough to stand in the way of friendship, but the cat's sudden change of heart comes out of nowhere and doesn't lend as much power to the moral of the tale as could be hoped. Still, this is one of the most beautifully illustrated books I've ever seen, and my toddler was enthralled with the fun, lively expressions on the duckling's face. Overall, Hey, Duck! is an entertaining read that falls a little short of delivering its message but wows the reader with incredible artwork.
