Tabby, eleven years old, is the chosen one&chosen by Ms. Winter, also known as the old maid, to leave Ms. Huttons knitting school and travel four days to a new home, Seldom House. She isnt the first girl to leave with Ms. Winter. Izzy left years ago, never to be seen or heard from again. Whatever happened to her?
She knows something is amiss the minute she leaves her old home, but she has no choice. Ms. Winter paid good money for her. Ms. Winter has an ice cold demeanor. She insists that Ms. Hutton confirm that Tabby has no bruises, no scars, no living relatives.
Tabby traveled by horse drawn carriage and boat with Ms. Winter and Arnby, arriving late at night. When she arrives at Seldom House , she is locked in her bedroom at night. She is scared out of her wits when she feels herself being poked by an apparition dressed in black, black holes in a white face where her eyes should be.
Days later, she is introduced to the young boy who is to be the households new master and to whom she is to be a maid and playmate. How can a young boy not born to the family be the new master? He, too , appears to have no scars, no bruises and no living relatives. With no formal Christian name, Jack, the old master, calls him the heathen git. Tabby calls him Himself. Himself, has a definite mean streak and he too, sees the ghosts wandering their new home.
As the days go by, they explore Seldom House to unlock the mysterious hidden secrets. Strange men are seen on the roof. Ghosts are seen throughout the house. Questions are asked but never answered. Tabby is beginning to have a strange feeling that the house will never give up its mysteries.
House of Dead Maids is creepy. Ghosts abound. Boy ghosts. Girl ghosts. Some are seen by Tabby. Some by Himself. Some by neither. Why are there ghosts to begin with? With very descriptive language, Dunkle slowly but scarily leaks out her story. What do the ghosts want? Is Tabby in for a similar fate? Id suggest reading House of Dead Maids with a friend. Certainly not alone. You might possibly want to close your bedroom door at night. But wait! Can a ghost pass through a closed door? Have a hauntingly good time reading House of Dead Maids.
