Of course, a lot of people have heard of this book - or at least the movie - by now. I'm a read-book-see-movie type person. I have to read the book, then see the movie.

John Smith is not your average school boy. His name may sound like it, but really it's not. It's one of about twenty other names he's had. He's normally just known as "Four." John is an alien from planet Lorien, which was exploited by the Mogadorians. The entire planet was pretty much destroyed, and there was barely enough time for nine of the alien children and their guardians to escape. These children had a charm placed on them so that they had to be killed in numerical order, unless two or more of them somehow meet up. Three have been killed so far, and now Number Four, John is next. These nine children are the only ones that can keep the Mogadorians from coming and destroying Earth, too. It's their job to save themselves and Earth, and eventually return back to Lorien.

After running his entire life, John has found himself happy in a small town in Ohio, where he's met a beautiful girl and even made a friend. It's not soon after, though, that the Mogadorians seem to be on their trail again. John has to choose between what he believes is love, or duty in protecting the country he never really knew.

This book is one of the most action-packed I've read all year. John is a likable character. He's funny, smart, athletic, and he loves his guardian, Henri, and his dog, Bernie Kosar. (Speaking of Bernie Kosar: most favorite character in the book) Each scene was well-written and dramatic. There were light moments, and heavy, dark moments. It was also full of some surprises, although some may have been more surprising to John than to the reader.

This book is definitely an attention grabber. The entire concept of the book is very interesting and I can't wait for August 2011 when The Power of Six comes out, because I thoroughly enjoyed the romance, adventure, and humor, and so will any fiction lover.

I was extremely excited when I heard I would get a chance to read /
review I Am Number Four. SciFi hasn't had a book lately that I was
absolutely in love with. This changed after I read IANF.
The voice of
John, A.K.A. Four, is real. You get so caught up in his life, that you
can catch yourself thinking it's real. Well, as real as you can get with
aliens roaming around.

You may be thinking that this is just a
guy's book. It definitely is not. Yes, there are aliens, yes there is
some fighting, but there is also an underlying romance. Which, if I may
add, is probably in the top 10 romances in a novel ever.

The
concept is great. Who doesn't enjoy the idea of a whole other planet
(Lorien), way beyond our years. Where people have powers and can throw
others into a different country with the flick of a wrist. I know I have
thought about it! But due to unfortunate circumstances, Lorien is being
destroyed by Mogadorians. Everyone on Lorien has been killed except
nine children and their guardians. They went into hiding on Earth with
the hopes of growing and developing their Legacies, so one day they can
avenge Lorien. But now, the Mogadorians are on Earth, trying to kill all
9 of the gifted children.
One, Two, and Three have been killed. Four is next, but him and his guardian, Henri, are not going down without a fight.

I
wish I knew these characters in real life. John (Four) reminds you of
any teenage boy who falls for a girl. At least until he trains for his
legacies... Henri is like the dad or uncle you wish to have. Always
there no matter what.
John makes a friend, Sam. He is a geek who
loves aliens. John also gets a girl, Sarah. She is sweet, super
friendly, and everyone loves her.

I Am Number Four is being
filmed. In my opinion the actors fit perfectly. I mean, I wont say no to
Alex Pettyfer!!! Dianna Agron is also part of the adaptation as Sarah,
which is perfect! As I read IANF, I did picture everyone as who they are
on screen.
It is due to hit the big screen February 18, 2011. But we all know that can change at any moment!

Now I can go on and on about this book, but I'll leave it here. I don't want to ruin anything for anyone!

I've heard people say that a great writer will make his/her readers feel something when reading their work; be it love or hate for the story itself, the characters as people, etc...if it wasn't great work those strong emotions wouldn't come out. After reading I Am Number Four, I can only say that Pittacus Lore is a great writer. I experienced all sorts of emotions and feelings while reading this book and I must say that after finishing it I wanted to have a nice little chat with Lore. After everything I was put through, the ending! Oh my gosh, I'm not going to give anything away, but Lore....you're killing me with that kind of ending.

I've always loved the paranormal/fantasy genres but never really got into science fiction of any kind, what can I say...aliens never really appealed to me. X-Files wasn't my thing, Sigourney Weaver was great in Aliens but I don't have it on my shelf and let's face it, normally aliens are not dream worthy or likely to make you go weak in the knees after you get a look at them, unless it's from fear. But that was all before I read I Am Number Four. Wow, did I do a 360 and change my mind quickly. John Smith (a.k.a. Number Four) is an alien and all around wonderful and unique character created by Lore. He's been running his entire life just trying to stay alive and ahead of the creatures out to kill him. With only his guardian Henri as his constant companion, life has been lonely for John. Never staying in one place long enough to make friends, he's never really been able to get close to anyone, at least not until Henri and John move to a small town in Ohio. In Ohio a lot changes, John is able to make friends and of course a few enemies (always happens to the new kid in school), information is unfolded and discoveries are made that begin to help John understand more of what his life is really all about.

Lore unfolded this story piece by calculated piece and he hit the nail on the proverbial head each and every time. I don't want to infringe on that but I intend to read more of the Lorien Legacy series in the future and more of Lore's work in general. With amazing writing that brought tears to my eyes (thanks a lot Lore!) and laughter as well, Lore will have you wanting to read more, more, more. He's already got me on his science fiction band wagon and I'm sure when you read this one, you'll be his next victim....readers don't stand a chance!
