What worked: Lyrical, poetic contemporary love story that spans the ages and the mystical bird that brings people together.
This story has a magical sense woven throughout. First readers are introduced to Evan Taft who feels his true purpose is to take care of his little brother after his father left them. Shosh Bell, an inspiring theater student, plans to go to a performing arts college in L.A. but is shattered by the sudden death of her beloved sister.
Both are connected by a song only they hear. A song that drives them together.
There's a lot in this novel. Sensitive issues such as mental illness, death, substance abuse, and death are portrayed in realistic ways. Through it all are songs of a mystical bird that draws not only Evan and Shosh together, but others throughout time. This novel has a surrealist feel without being too over the top. The dialogue has a John Green feel with its catchy beat.
Fast-paced, melodic writing draws readers into not only Evan's story but Shosh's as well. Both characters seem so different, but the songs draw them together. I ended up being totally invested in their story which doesn't end after high school.
Another big plus is the audiobook has a link to the music referenced in the story. I love to listen to audiobooks and follow along with the book. I loved the narrators who sang bits of Nightbird's songs which are haunting and beautiful.
Coming-of-age story that spans time and brings two together through the magic of Nightbird's music.
