Beautiful and Inspiring
The Soil in Jackie’s Garden is a perfect resource for a garden science unit, whether it be in a traditional school setting or a homeschool one.
Opening vertically, this lyrically written book is fun and interactive. Transforming the cumulative style of ‘The House that Jack Built,’ children, and their adults, will tour through the life cycle of a plant, learn about compost, gardening, and the benefits from all of these things.
The beautiful illustrations show the science of gardening, both above and below the soil, as well as kids working together and having fun. There is a diverse group of kids including a child with a physical disability showing that everyone can contribute to helping in the garden.
I love that Jackie’s garden is located in a community garden, not just in a backyard. I feel this will inspire kids who live in areas where a backyard garden isn’t possible to find a common space to start one for their neighborhood.
The backmatter includes a more in-depth look at The Soil Cycle including flowcharts, illustrations, and descriptions. There is also a section on creating a compost pile!
The Soil in Jackie’s Garden is a must for any book shelf!
