I wasn't sure what to expect when I opened this book. I knew that it was probably going to be eye opening, sad, gripping and make me think. And did it ever! The book begins in Skylar Thompson's point of view. She is being questioned by the police about an incident involving her boyfriend, Jimmy, her friend, Sean, and two El Salvadoran immigrants. Skylar knows what happens, but she wants to protect Jimmy. The book is told from several point of views and eventually the reader learns what really happened. This book brought emotions out of me that I didn't even realize were there. What an incredible story!
I could not put this book down. It saddened me greatly and I honestly had no idea that this is a real problem. I admit I am a bit naive, and I live in the mid-west where I think we're a bit sheltered, but I am so thankful for books like this. It not only helps me learn more about racism, but it helps me realize that these horrific things actually go on in our country.
I really loved Caroline Bock's writing style. It was so easy to jump from point of view because she wrote the characters so well. It's very easy to get confused when a book switches like that, but I found it very easy to just fall into whichever character she was writing as. I look forward to reading her novels in the future!
