In the beginning of this book, Edward makes the hard decision to leave Forks and Bella behind for her own safety. Bella sinks into utter despair and depression, you can almost feel the hole inside herself that she talks about and feels. Her saving grace is her old friend Jacob. He makes her feel not like Edward, but a little more whole. He makes no secret of his feelings for her and she makes it clear that she is not whole that way. But then Jacob becomes a werewolf, the enemy of the vampires, and Edwards's sister, Alice, comes back to visit Bella. Due to a misunderstanding, Edward thinks Bella is dead, and goes to Italy to try to get the Volturi, an ancient vampire allegiance, to kill him. Bella must deal with her strong connection with Jacob and her undeniable love for Edward. She still longs to become a vampire to be with Edward forever. She and Alice fly to Italy to try to stop Edward. Will they get to him in time, what will happen if they don't, what will happen if they do? This is a gripping book and the reunion is memorable in many ways and also leaves more loose ends, more questions, more problems. It is a good addition to Twilight and a good preface to Eclipse.
