Curls:
Curls celebrate African American girls and their hair. With several styles featured, the message of love and confidence is embraced with the warm and vibrant illustrations. I like that mother figures are featured to show the loving contribution they make in their daughters' lives by styling their hair into lovely braids. This book is great for toddler-Early elementary readers to inspire confidence in their curls.
Glow:
Glow captures all the summertime fun that comes before a relaxing bedtime bath. This book is perfect for Toddler and Preschool bedtime routines and a good cuddle. In Forman’s poetic words and Geneva Bowers' captivating illustrations, we see a boy who has fun in nature and also recognizes the inner glow within himself. The message of inner worth and confidence is powerful and lovely. Overall, this is another well-done board book about inner confidence and beauty, this time with a male character.
Bloom:
Bloom contains vibrant illustrations of cheerful girls and the affirming words that they bloom. Simple and to the point but with a big message that these girls are vibrant and you are too is a great read for young girls of color. This book is an empowering read for girls and great for the Pre-K age range to build self-confidence.
Ours:
With simple words, the book, Ours, sends affirming language of love with one’s appearance. The board book includes a mirror for little readers to gaze upon their faces and see the beauty within themselves. The illustrations are vibrant and the children represented are happy and surrounded by friends who also feel confident in their appearance. The only thing that I found slightly vague at first was that what the children loved is not expressly revealed; you are just given the overall impression of what the book is about by the time the mirror is shown.
