The Holocaust is a prevalent subject in many high school lit classes, but most stories focus on a Jewish protagonists struggle to avoid or overcome persecution. Sky is a different kind of storythe teenage daughter of a Christian minister decides to join the resistance movement in Holland. The simple and straightforward way that Ippisch relates her story, which included time spent in a German prison, is consistent with the advice she receives when she first tries to join the movement: There is nothing adventurous or romantic about working against the enemyit is incredibly hard work. Your life will not be yours anymore (38). Indeed, Ippisch presents the story almost as though it happened to someone else, and does not dwell on her heroism or the atrocities she suffered in prison. As a result, the pace of the book can be a bit slow at times (especially when pastoral reflections on Ippischs childhood hinder the pacing of the plot), but ultimately speaks about the true depth of the authors courage.
