The Darkness Within Us is the companion sequel to The Shadows Between Us, this time with Chrysantha Stathos as the new main character. In this highly fictionalized world, the author hits on major themes of women’s rights. Chrysantha was married off to a man old enough to be her grandfather and endured his unwanted attentions until his death. There she flourished in the power of a Dowager Duchess who is wealthy and free to never remarry. That all changes when a new will is discovered and a brute of a handsome man, Eryx Demos, arrives to claim the money, lands, and title as the grandson of the Duke.
From the start, their relationship is delightfully spirited. Readers follow along with Chrysantha to learn that Eryx has many secrets. Even though the story followed a predictable path of enemies to lovers, it is greatly entertaining and, in many ways, I enjoyed this story more than Alessandra’s.
Alessandra does make an appearance in this book, and the sisters did take some time to repair their relationship, which is a nice touch. Overall, this book hit all the right notes for an entertaining love story where we can root for the characters to kiss and make up.
