Jake’s birthday is coming up, and he has the best birthday party planned out: a dinosaur sleepover. Unfortunately, when it's time for Jake’s party, all his friends have the fl,u and it seems that they will have to reschedule the sleepover. Jake goes to bed disappointed, but then he hears noise coming from downstairs and can’t help but investigate; he stumbles upon some mysterious guests sitting in his living room. These three dinosaurs have invited themselves to Jake’s house to make sure that he has an unforgettable birthday. They just have one rule: don’t tell the T-rex.

What I Liked: This book opens with an overexcited Jake due to his upcoming birthday party, until he is disappointed because his friends are all ill and won’t be able to attend. When the dinosaurs appear in the story, you can visibly see the expression on Jake’s face change, as well as his body language, to show his excitement.

The illustrations in this book match the settings, and the dinosaurs are fun yet realistic. These images make it so that adults might believe that Jake is having a dream, while children will be enchanted by the dinosaurs joining our world. The various adventures that Jake goes on with the dinosaurs are imaginative and entertaining. It's even more fun when T-rex joins their party, and you are on the edge of your seat, hoping things go well for everyone.

Final Verdict: The Great Dinosaur Sleepover is an entertaining tale of a sleepover gone astray as dinosaurs come to town. Children ages 3 and up who enjoy dinosaurs will laugh at the various antics that Jake and the dinosaurs get up to and the shocked faces on Jake’s parents when he tells them about his night.

The Great Dinosaur Sleepover is a funny picture book that turns a disappointing birthday into an unforgettable adventure. Jake is excited for a dinosaur-themed sleepover, but when all his friends come down with the flu, it seems like the party is ruined. Just as he goes to bed feeling disappointed, he hears noises downstairs and discovers three dinosaurs have come to celebrate with him. The story is full of humor, surprises, and a sense of magic that makes Jake’s night truly special. I loved how the story balances excitement with a little tension, especially when the T-rex shows up and Jake has to navigate the chaos without giving away the secret.

Reading this book with kids was a joy because it instantly grabbed their attention. They laughed at Jake’s expressions and body language as he goes from disappointment to amazement, and they were completely captivated by the dinosaurs’ antics. The illustrations are vibrant, cinematic, and perfectly capture both the real-world setting and the fantastical presence of dinosaurs in Jake’s home. I liked that the dinosaurs felt fun but still believable, which made it easy for kids to imagine them actually showing up for a birthday party. My favorite part is when Jake and the dinosaurs get into playful adventures together, it’s energetic, imaginative, and full of heart.

One thing I would have liked to see a bit more of is the parents’ reactions when they discover what happened, because it would have added another layer of humor and connection for readers. Still, the story shines as a playful, high-energy tale that celebrates friendship, creativity, and the joy of unexpected surprises. It’s perfect for young dinosaur enthusiasts and makes a great read-aloud for both bedtime and daytime story sessions.

Jake is a kid after my own heart if it can be dinosaur-themed, he wants it. Dino games, dino cake, dino balloons, probably dino-shaped napkins. He’s READY. But when all his friends come down with the flu? Instant heartbreak. I felt that in my soul.

But then…THUMP. SCRAPE. MUNCH???

Jake sneaks into the living room expecting disappointment, and instead finds a herd of dinosaurs casually helping themselves to his birthday celebration like they RSVP’d “yes” weeks ago. I’m talking full-on prehistoric party crashers who show up ready to make this kid’s night unforgettable.

What follows is a chaotic, hilarious, and absolutely adorable dino sleepover think giant footprints on the carpet, dino dance parties, and everyone trying really hard not to wake the T. rex because, well you know.

This book is pure joy from start to finish. It takes a sad, lonely birthday and flips it into the best night ever with warmth, humor, and that Linda Bailey charm that always mixes heart with wild imagination. The illustrations pack in so many funny little moments I found myself lingering on every page.
