The characters, the arena, the politics, the strategy, the emotions.. all of it is so meticulously designed that it thrusts you right into the heart of things and you become preoccupied with the characters and events as if you were going throgh them yourself.
it was the perfect start to the year.
The story, told in the first person narrative of Katniss Everdennn, a 17 year old from a world where children are forced to hunt and gather food on a daily basis or starve
where no one is allowed past their own district limits. Unless they're being led off the Hunger Games, of course
An event with a political message that the Capitol of Panem uses to scare all 12 districts into submission through pitting 24 of their children against each other in a struggle for survival. The last one alive wins a life of sustenance and apprehensive glory.
In a haunting echo of George Orwell's 1984, Suzanne Chollins manages to represent a future world that's cold and unforgiving. In fact, the similarities between the two novels are numerous:
- The people of district twelve and others are not allowed to venture outside their own limits or know anything about the life of their neighbors in other districts. Obviously this policy is adopted to discourage a second rebellion.
- Food is a precious commodity, so much that one must catch it him/herself if they expect to survive
-People keeling over from the starvation is a common event, however, starvation is never the declared cause of death
-Trespassers and enemies of the state are shot/whipped without any trials
