Kate is working as a cook for her father’s study group on location in Baja California. Her father is trying to prove the existence of Merlin by finding two things. One, he must discover a very old ship, which sank in 1547. Secondly, he must find a flask inside the ship. While kayaking, breaking a piece of professional equipment, and finding a very gross fish, Kate uncovers a dark secret. She meets an “aging” sailor, a she-devil, some whales, and maybe, just maybe that mysterious wizard himself.


I enjoyed this book very much. It took me only about a day to read, but was very gripping, thanks to Tom Barron, the author. The book will entice readers with the vocabulary, map, and ideas. The fantasy inside is enchanting and creative. I loved the idea of Merlin’s escape and Nimue’s “hatred.” I recommend this book for any young adult. Tom Barron is a genius.
