In Brooklyn in the summer not so long ago, children had to go outside and find ways to entertain themselves like playing tag or kick the can. They would get excited for the ice cream truck and everybody was a friend. There was a lot less hate and a lot less crime. Things were simple without electronics to distract them. Children had to go out and interact with each other instead of sitting behind a television screen.
THE WORLD BELONGED TO US brings the reader back to the time before electronics ruled our lives and when children enjoyed the world around them. They could do anything their imagination came up with and had friends all around the block. The illustrations bring a nostalgic feel and makes me wish I was a part of those Brooklyn summers. They're inclusive in races and I love how the author talks about how different languages were spoken too. It didn't matter where you were from because everyone enjoyed each other's company. I have to say that I also love the dedication "To my childhood friends, tag you're all it." It's witty and brought a smile to my face.
Final Verdict: THE WORLD BELONGED TO US is a story of friendship and outdoor activities and is perfect to inspire children to get off their electronics. For those parents who want to show their children how much fun you can have with very little, this is the perfect book.
