Spike the bear has a whole amazing trip planned for him and his friend, Roscoe the rabbit. But oh dear, from the very beginning, things don't go as planned, and Spike is ready to call it a disaster. However, Roscoe's relentless optimism helps him see the bright side and the friends make many happy memories together.

It's colorful and bright and full of spring time camping adventures. Feeling lost? Maybe the map was upside down. Hard to have hot chocolate when the fire won't start, but chocolate milk is just as tasty; and the hammock would have been fun, but so is flopping in a nice pile of leaves! Spike and Roscoe are a great duo, and the story is mainly full of their dialogue as they bounce ideas off each other, demonstrating how friends can have different personalities and get along in spite of, or because of, those differences.

Recommend for lovers of grumpy bears, happy rabbits, friendship stories, and spending a night in the great outdoors.

This Was Not the Plan is a charming and colorful picture book that teaches young readers an important lesson about handling disappointment. Aimed at children ages 3 to 7, the story follows Spike the bear, who has carefully planned the perfect camping trip with his friend Roscoe. However, almost nothing goes the way Spike expects, and his frustration quickly builds.

Spike is a relatable character for young children who like things to go a certain way. When plans fall apart, he sees the entire trip as a failure. In contrast, Roscoe the rabbit brings a completely different attitude. He remains cheerful and flexible, always finding a way to turn problems into something fun. This contrast between Spike and Roscoe is what drives the story and makes it both entertaining and meaningful.

As the trip continues, small mishaps turn into opportunities. A failed campfire leads to a different kind of treat, getting lost becomes part of the adventure, and missed expectations are replaced with new experiences. Through simple dialogue and playful interactions, the book shows that things do not have to be perfect to be enjoyable. This message is especially valuable for younger readers who are still learning how to manage frustration.

The illustrations are bright, lively, and full of energy. The springtime setting and outdoor scenes make the story feel warm and inviting. The artwork also helps express the characters’ emotions clearly, making it easy for children to understand how Spike feels and how his perspective changes over time.

Overall, This Was Not the Plan is a heartwarming story about flexibility, friendship, and optimism. It encourages children to adapt when things go wrong and reminds them that sometimes unexpected moments can turn into the best memories. The kids I read this to loved it!
