Dhampyr transitions should come with a warning label.

Tasi, an eighteen-year-old dhampyr, read the chant that starts her final transition to immortality. Little did she know how those few spoken words would turn her world into complete chaos.

Now, in a race against time, Tasi must follow the quests given to her by a group of vampire-hating fae—known as the iele—all while they torment her mentally and physically. If she fails, it is a failure that results in her death.

Will the journey be too much for Tasi to withstand?
Is she mentally strong enough to earn her immortality?
What if her failures diminish any hope for her younger sister’s future?
And the boy she’s soul bound to . . . what happens to him?

Follow Tasi, as she sets out on her path that's going to test her strength, her will, her patience, and her tolerance for pain.

I found this book to be really intense from the start. It gives off that kind of energy where you know right away that things are going to get messy, painful, and emotionally draining in the best possible way for a fantasy story. Tasi is thrown into something that sounds terrifying even before the real chaos begins, and that makes the whole book feel urgent. There is no room to relax because every new step she takes seems to push her closer to danger.

What I liked most is how much pressure Tasi is under. She is not just trying to survive some random supernatural challenge. She is fighting through a brutal transition to immortality while also trying to protect her younger sister and deal with the consequences of every mistake she makes. That kind of setup makes the story feel personal, not just action-driven. The stakes are not abstract. They are emotional, physical, and deeply tied to the people she loves.

The iele sound like especially cruel antagonists, and that adds a lot to the atmosphere. The idea that they are forcing Tasi through tests that torment her both mentally and physically makes the story feel harsh in a way that fits the title perfectly. I like fantasy books that do not make the journey easy, and this one seems like it really puts the main character through the wringer. It feels like one of those stories where every victory has a cost.

Tasi herself seems like a strong character to follow because she has to keep going even when everything is stacked against her. I think that kind of character works well in a story like this because the reader gets to see whether strength is just about fighting, or whether it is also about endurance, fear, love, and refusing to give up when things become unbearable. Her bond with the boy she is soul bound to adds even more tension, since that relationship gives the story a deeper emotional layer.

I also think the sister dynamic makes this book stand out. A lot of fantasy stories focus only on the main character’s survival, but here Tasi is carrying the future of her younger sister too. That makes every decision feel heavier. She is not just trying to win for herself. She is trying to protect someone else from getting dragged into the same darkness. That kind of motivation can make a story hit a lot harder.

Overall, I found Tormented to be a strong choice for readers who like fantasy that is dark, emotional, and full of pressure. It sounds like a book that does not hold back, and that is part of what makes it interesting. If someone wants a story with danger, emotional stakes, supernatural tests, and a main character who has to fight for everything she wants, this seems like a really good pick.
Good Points
Very high stakes that make the story feel urgent and dramatic

Strong emotional focus on family, survival, and connection
