"Tally is about to turn sixteen, and she can't wait. Not for her license - for turning pretty. In Tally's world, your sixteenth birthday brings an operation that turns you from a repellent ugly into a stunningly attractive pretty and catapults you into a high-tech paradise where your only job is to have a really great time. IN just a few weeks Tally will be there.
But Tally's new friend Shay isn't sure she wants to be pretty. She'd rather risk life on the outside. When Shay runs away, Tally learns about a whole new side of the pretty world - and it isn't very pretty. The authorities offer Tally the worst choice she can imagine: find her friend and turn her in, or never turn pretty at all. The choice Tally makes changes her world forever."

At first I thought this book was really boring and not all that well written, but the more I got into the plot the better it got. It might not be my favorite book, but its no slouch.

There are two things I love about this book:
1. the writing
2. the reality

Scott Westerfeld is my all-time favorite author. He can paint the pictures in my mind so well. But, the reality of the story is amazing. If you described the book to someone they usually wouldn't see the reality. But when you read it, you ,or at least I, can tell that even though we don't go through that drastic of a surgery, we will usually do anything to look 'pretty'. Even though everyone else sees a normal person, we see the ugliest thing in the world when we look in the mirror. We love but hate the people that are already so beautiful, but sometimes they are the ones that envy you also.
Anyway, this book is GREAT!!! I have recommened it to my family and friends, and I have had long conversations at the dinner table about the book, even though nobody has a clue what I am talking about. THIS IS THE BEST booK I HAVE EVER READ!!! SCOTT WESTERFELD ROCKS!!!

This was a grat book. I read 4 times already and I just got it two weeks ago. i love how when you read abook once twice and even three times and each time you read somthing new or understand something better. I really like Shay and Tally because I can relate to them both in one way or another. I give this book a 5+ star rating!
I also can't waid for Prities the other boook!

At first I really didnt know what to make of this book. then i understood the concept. I also think that Tally is very vain. I guess it's not totally her fault though. She's constintly reminding herself she's ugly even when David thinks she's beautiful. The book raises lots of questions as to what the future will be like.

Uglies suprised me because it has a lot of politcal meaning in it. Uglies is about a world where everyone gets to be pretty and Tally can't wait to get her operation. That is, until she meets Shay. Shay teaches Tally how to hoverboard, think for herself, and most of all, realize that beauty is skin deep. When Shay runs away, Tally's chance at being pretty is threatend. She has to bring her friend back and tell the city officials her location in order to become pretty. When Tally reaches the Smoke however, she doesn't know if she wants to go back to Prettyville.

Uglies is the story of soon to be sixteen year old Tally who is an "Ugly". In her time and place everyone is born ugly with rare beauties and when an ugly turns sixteen they are given a cosmetic operation that makes them drop dead beautiful. Tally like many other otherUglies aspires to be beautiful and grows more and more envious of New Pretty Town as her operation comes closer. She's never met anyone who's never wanted to be pretty until she meets and befriends Shay. Shay is unpredictable and a nonconformist. She doesn't want to turn pretty she sees it as becoming ugly and brainwashed. It isn't until Shay runs away the eve of her sixteenth birthday and Tally's sixtenth birthday because they share the same birthday that Tally is told that she will not become pretty until she findsHsay and the other Uglies wjho escaped. Tally is forced to mull over the price of friendhsip and the coast of betrayal. Is A Pretty Face worth more than a friend's life, is the question posed in this satircal novel of cosmetic surgery and the "price" perople pay to have "good" looks.

Tally can’t wait to turn sixteen so she can have the operation that will turn her into a drop-dead gorgeous girl they call pretties. That would have happened if she hadn’t befriended Shay. Shay disappears into the night to go to the Smoke right before Tally’s operation. The Smoke is a place that’s shrouded in mystery but from what Tally hears, it’s a bunch of uglies that ran away before their sixteenth birthday to live in the wild. Specials are a group of pretties that are not only pretty but also stronger because they are law inforcers that work discreetly. They want to know where the Smoke is so they can bring back the uglies and the bad news is that they know that Shay had gone to the Smoke and that Tally is a friend of hers. Tally is given a choice: find the Smoke and reveal its whereabouts or remain an ugly forever. One event leads into another as Tally’s ticket to New Pretty town slips farther away.

I loved this book because it has great ideas and Scott Westerfeld can always find a way to surprise you. If you can get your hands on this book, they won’t come of it ‘till you’ve finished reading it.
