I gotta say...the first few pages of this book, I was NOT buying it. Sure, dragons are almost always awesome, and the illustrations of the different species of dragons in Tui T. Sutherland's otherworldly (well, it should be since it IS another world) dragon kingdom piqued my interest, but when I started to read about the dragonets of the prophecy, who not only talk, but talk in modern-day, tween-ish language, I was initially put off. I didn't think I could go on.
But I did. These tweenage dragons rock! This story is told from the perspective of Clay, who is a Mudwing and fiercely protective of the rest of the dragonets he has grown up with. Strong, clumsy, and handsome without knowing it, learning about his world through his eyes, I actually, yes, connected with the feelings and thoughts of a dragon. And as he and his friends go out into the world to seek their destiny, their story keeps the pages turning. Sutherland has a way with descriptions--even her explanations of dragon fights were compelling and enabled me to visualize the dragons in all their glory, going after each other. The book gets a little slow in the middle, but picks up the pace after a key character is introduced and others are...well, you'll have to pick up this fantastic fantasy read to get a dose of dragon-dom. I'm ready for the next book!
