Winter Rose by Patricia Mckillip is a master fantasy told by a master fantasy writer. In this story, Mckillip delivers a lyrical and interesting tale that is basically a retelling of the Tam Lin story.
The story is about two sisters, the beautiful proper Laurel who is engaged to be married and the main heroine of the story, wild, untamed Rois who roams the woods near their home. Then a young man named Corbet Lynn enters their lives and changes both sisters forever, especially Rois.
Mckillip's books are very unique and highly literate pieces of art. The way she plays with words and describes things are so compelling. There's always the sense of another layer of meaning behind her works and hidden mysteries you're not quite sure about.
If you enjoy Robin Mckinley, you may enjoy this. Overall, a strange and fascinating story.
