Indian in the Cupboard

As a third grade teacher, I have to say The Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks is a great way to get kids interested in studying about Native Americans. The idea that toys could come to life is captivating to any young child. The three main characters wrestle with their own ideas. Omri the child thinks owning small people is ok. Little Bear the Indian and Boone the cowboy have to set aside their differences to survive in an unimagined environment. The friendships they build last throughout an entire series of books. This is a fantastic book that would spark imagination and interest in cultures for any child in grades 3-6.

Indian in the Cupboard is a delightful story about a boy whose plastic indian comes to life when placed in his magical cupboard. Ms. Banks is especially talented at creating unique and likable characters with their own mannerisms and voice. This is a deep story about prejudices and characters overcoming these to form beautiful friendships.

The Indian In The Cupboard was a great book. It had amazing action and went at a smooth pace. The characters in the book matched the needs for a great story. The storyline is great. I definately recommend this fascinating book to you.

Summary - It all starts on Omri's birthday when he recieves a cupboard and a plastic Indian toy. He tries all his mother's keys and finds the one that fits. He puts his Indian in, locks the door and goes to sleep. The next morning, he is woken up by little noises coming from the cupboard. When he opens it, he finds a really tiny Indian (alive) standing infront of him. The story is about what they go through together.

SUMMARY- The book Indian In The Cupboard is about a kid named Omri and an Indian called Little Bear he gets from his best friend Patrick. He also got a skateboard, a mysterious cupboard from his brother, and a key that fit the lock of the cupboard perfect. That night when Omri was about to go to bed he put the Indian in the cupboard. He locked the cupboard door and went to sleep. When Omri woke up the next morning he heard a noise that came from the cupboard, so he opened the door and he couldn't believe it, the Indian came to life!

OPINION- I thought this book was very good because it always kept you on the edge of your seat and always wanting to know what was going to happen next. My favorite character is Little Bear because he is brave and wanted to explore, and my favorite part is when omri went to the store to get his mom something and when he came back he found his brothers playing with the longhouse Little Bear made for him to live in.

RECOMENDATIONS- I recomend this book for the ages of 10 through 15 because kids over 15 probably won't have the imagination for this book. Kids under 10 probably will have trouble with the book.
