All eyes are on seventeen-year-old Lonnie Jackson while he practices with his team for a city-wide basketball Tournament of Champions. His coach, Cal, knows Lonnie has what it takes to be a pro-basketball player, but warns him about giving in to the pressure. Cal knows because he, too, once had the chance--but sold out.

As the Tournament nears, Lonnie learns that some heavy bettors want Cal to keep him on the bench so that the team will lose the championship. As the last seconds of the game tick away Lonnie and Cal must make a decision. Are they willing to blow the chance of a lifetime?

Hoops by Walter Dean Meyers
Hoops
a review by Cody Chace
The main point of Hoops preaches about one of Americas favorite and most watched sports Basketball. I was especially attracted to this book because I have been playing basketball for practically my entire life. Naturally this book would attract many readers just by reading the title and possibly a little background information about the basic setting, plot, and main characters of the story. The author Walter Dean Meyers has created numerous sports books that so many people have come to enjoy and only expect more from. The very complex and dynamic characters always created by Walter Dean Meyers have a witty personality as well as a very sophisticated lifestyle for themselves, friends, and families. The majority of his books are written in a modern day setting with events occurring in the present time. It usually discusses the daily life of the main character and what that person specifically does during the day. Also, in Hoops it explains as well as portrays the interaction between friends during and after school and on the basketball court. Walter Dean Meyers does a great job in showing in great detail how each character acts and how he or she responds to a different situation or problem. The setting is always different that where it would normally be expected mainly due to his want of being unique. Hoops should be proudly read by anyone who basically enjoys to read and will remain conflict the lives of the touched readers who have read the amazing book of Hoops.

Can this young man make it to where e is destined to be, or will he be held up in the rush and tretury of the game? This book is about a 17 year old boy named Lonnie Jackson, whose dream is to play in the NBA. A New York City-wide basketball tournament takes place. Scouts are at the games to draft players. Lonnine and his team are coached by a former NBA star, Cal, who lost his career by shaving points. Cal tries to teach Lonnie about the temptations he will face and the choices not to make. You'll love the trials Lonnie goes through and the excitement of the games. I liked this book and i think it is a wonderful family, induvidual, or any type of group book. I enjoy basketball, but even if you don't enjoy the game you'll love all of the suspense, thrill, and drama in this book. I reccomend this to kids and adults of any age because it is fun to read and it also shows and proves a life lesson, even if it is in the form of a basketball game.

Lonnie, from Harlam, enters a basketball tournament. His coach, Cal, is a former basketball player. Cal teaches Lonnie about the game and about the pressure. Meanwhile, Lonnie tries to face the everyday burdens of living in poverty. I would highly recommend this book because it's fun to read and it seems as if the story could really happen.
