This is a big-little, important book for readers who are coming of age themselves and grappling with all of the uncertainty and volatility that can contain. My son brought this book home from the school library back in the 4th grade and insisted that I read it. I always take my son's book recs seriously, and this one did not disappoint. The writing style is familiar and easy to absorb and unpack, which serves it well since there are pretty tough topics in the book, such as racial and class prejudice. The story is a quirky tale that quickly morphs into a Steinbeck-evoking literary offering for middle grade and up readers. It's a rarity these days for authors to give younger readers the chance to be a little challenged and grow their abilities to absorb serious concepts and a nice vocabulary. Well done, Mr. Spinelli!
Good Points
Refreshing, original story that doesn't dumb down for younger readers.

This book never gets old, and I actually like the movie to it also, which is pretty unusual of me!
Good Points
The thing I like about this book the most is how Spinelli fits in the racism part in book. Ex: How Blacks are on one side and whites on the other. I think it's a great understanding book for kids.

There was a boy named Jeffery Magee. Who lived with his parents not so long. Because they had a trolley accident. Then he became an orphan. Then he went to go live with  his aunt and uncle for eight years. He did not like live with them. So he decided to run away. Not just run away but run. and that is where his live begins.

I like this book because it has friendship and another reason because it has adventure.

I advise book to people who like adventure and friendship.Seriously Read It!

The book Maniac Magee was a good book! This book was about a boy who has problems, and what he decides to do with those problems is to just forget about them. Espeically by running from them! In this book it tells you about Jeffrey's problems and what it is like to be homeless and not stick around in one place. The author Jerry Spinelli tells a heart warming tale about a boy, a family, an old man, and people in the past. This book is a great book. This book is a good book that many kids and adults can relate to. Mainly because this boy is an outcast and some people know what that feels like.  This book also has a great ending, so if you are stuck in the book and deciding wether or not to finish it, finish it! This book deserves an A+!

This is a story about all the difficulties in an adolescent life. The richness of its truth and innocense makes Maniac Magee a fun and entertaining book that is a perfect read for a raining day. There is no other childrens' book that can captivate its readers' hearts better than this silly tale.

Maniac Magee was a really good book!! At the begining his parents died and he moved to his Aunt Dots & Uncle Dans house. I bet that it was tough living with his Aunt and Uncle. After I read on I realized how much the author exxagerated, like when he said that "Jeffery had ran for a year. The summary for this story is that Jeffery Magee wanted a family!!

It is a good book that teaches people blacks and whites are like the same people on the inside, and the color of somebody shouldn't matter its how they act and if there nice to you and to other people.
