The story focuses on young Ben O'Neal, who lives on the isolated North Carolina coast with his widowed mother at the turn of the century. Ben's life is changed when he discovers the sole survivor of a shipwreck washed up on the beach-- a girl of about his own age who recovers physically but can not speak. Nicknamed "Teetoncey" (the local word for "tiny"), Ben regards her with a combination of fascination and annoyance. The book chronicles their relationship, with a surprising turn of events at the end.
Well-told and historically accuarate, this is a good adventure story for boys or girls. It is followed by two sequels, "Teetoncey and Ben O'Neal" and "The Odyssey of Ben O'Neal."
