In this book, Lina lives underground in a city called Ember. No one knows that there is an above ground. The city was founded a long time ago, and the secret way out was locked up in the mayor's office. However, this secret was lost and no one alive believes that there is a way out. But, the power generator is breaking down and no one knows how to fix it. The food and other supplies are also running out when Lina finds an old piece of paper that talks of a way out of the city. The townspeople don't believe her and want to imprison her even though they can see that their town is collapsing. She and her friend Doon have to find a way to escape from Ember and convince the others to leave before it is too late.
This book was really exciting. I couldn't put it down. If you like books like Running Out of Time by Haddix, then you will like this book. Also, it is being made into a movie.

I read the city of Ember this past summer and I really loved it. The plot was creative and the the characters seemed real to me. I enjoyed envisioning my life living in almost darkness like the people of Ember live. Lina and Doon, old friends, are brought together again by a strange exciting adventure. the book is exciting an well written and left me anxious for the second, the peolple of the sparks.
