The authors couldn't find any engaging books on math, physics, or chemistry for children, so decided to write their own. This is certainly packed with all sorts of learning experiences, and is a great book to read with children in kindergarten and up who are starting to cover a lot of these concepts. As a child who loved books that had me melt string onto the top of an ice cube with salt, I would have loved all of the activities, and as a mother whose daughter put an abacus on her baby registry, I feel like I am definitely the demographic for this book, even if I don't look quite like Cooper and Theresa's grandmother (with her gray hair, fuzzy sweater, and skirt) quite yet!

I especially liked that there were books for further reading listed at the back, although it was a little odd that the table of contents were on the front boards of the book and the Learning Check and Further Reading on the back boards.

It's never too early to start children learning STEM information, and this is a great picture book that offers a story along with a ton of math and science facts. Dodd's Full House and Hutchins Full House are read alikes, but it is hard to find too many books that do as good a job explaining math and science facts.
Good Points
Cooper and Theresa Bright want to make their grandmother's birthday the best one ever, so they ask their parents what the should do. A cake is absolutely necessary, and they also decide they should make a card, buy a present, and throw a party. Preparations get underway, and involve a lot of measuring and math. The children learn about units of weight and measurement, and how those apply to the different cake ingredients. Temperature and units of time are explored when thinking about how long the cake should bake. Measuring devices for length are discussed when cards are being produced, as are shapes and colors. There's even a flow chart to identify different shapes! THe children look at their finances when deciding how to fund a present, and explore temperatures when deciding what to wear. The family maps their route and plans how long it will take them to drive to Grandma and Grandpa's house, and even looks at the quickest way to get places. There's a brief look at decorations, balloons, and even how to cut the cake fairly and cool the lemonade. In the end, Grandma says it's the best birthday she has ever had!
