101 FIRST WORDS is a collection of images and words built around different topics, such as fruits, vegetables, pets, and more. Each page has a theme along with choice images and words.

What I loved: The book covers a great number of topics and keeps things bright and interesting on each page with colored boxes around images. The book includes some photographs and others as images or drawings to mix up the type of images. The words for each item are large and clear which helps with early word recognition, and having sections for colors and shapes is a nice touch for early learning.

What left me wanting more: The illustration style varies widely with some things being quite far from the real object/animal (like the cow shown on the cover) and others being pretty good drawings. It seems like they used random clip art for a lot of the pictures, so the quality varies a lot. The photographs were really great throughout, however, and children will be able to get the idea from the images.

Final verdict: 101 FIRST WORDS is a colorful collection of words that infants and toddlers will enjoy looking at.
