About the Book:
Heartstopper meets Magical Boy in this heartwarming YA graphic novel full of heart, adorable illustrations, and a storyline every teenager can relate to.
Teenager Boo Meadows’s story continues in this second volume! With pink hair and a very vivid imagination, Boo has trouble separating from the real world. In her daydreams, she dances beautifully at balls or fights monsters as a magical girl. In reality, she has a complicated home life, work stress, school stress, and a wicked crush on the girl of her dreams.
After life became too toxic to endure, Boo has moved out of her alcoholic mother’s house. Can Boo and Mimi stick together? And is dealing with Mimi’s unapproving mother any better than Boo’s mom?

Rainbow! Volume 2 picks up right where we left Boo at the closing of Volume 1, in which things are only getting more complicated for her at home. Boo Meadow has met Mimi and has a crush on her but she has yet to admit to herself or anyone else her sexuality. Things shift in this book as Boo grows into who she is and begins to embrace herself with the help of those around her. Boo has had enough of living in her alcoholic mom’s house so she moves out to try life on her own. Will Boo and Mimi be able to stay together through all of this?
What I Liked: This book opens by reminding you of where we left Boo at the close of the first volume which is great in case there has been some time in between reading the two books. This book also gives you more insight into Mimi so that you learn more about her backstory and why she is drawn to Boo. Throughout this book, you also get more in-depth with the people who work alongside Boo and realize just how much support she has with everyone in her life.
Throughout the book, Boo learns to trust Mimi and lets her into her fantasy world as they build these stories together. There are times when Mimi can be frustrating as she wants to defy her parents even when her dad wants to support her and keep her safe. These are the moments in which you have to remind yourself that Boo and Mimi are still teenagers even if Boo reads like an adult because of the things that she has faced.
This book uses vivid colors that contrast the dark backstories of each character, making this story come to life. When the mom appears in Boo’s story she is contrasted with the colors for the rest of the story which clarifies to the reader that she is supposed to be a villain. There is also a shift in the colors used when Mimi shares stories about her mom and the way she responds to her sexuality.
Final Verdict: Rainbow! Volume 2 is a great continuation of this graphic novel that makes you root for Boo the whole time. Young adults ages 12 and up will enjoy this book as they might find similarities with their lives. This is a book that many will be able to relate to and seek solace in as things keep looking up for all of the characters.
