This actually gets a 3.5/5 star rating from me.
This was such a cool book. I liked the premise immediately and I was hooked within the first few pages by Cas's voice and his ability. I hadn't read a book about a ghost hunter before and this was really well done.
The characters were super interesting and I really liked how we got to know all of them. I like that they each brought their strengths to the table as ghost hunters, even if they had had no prior experience with it or had no idea they were going to become involved in the supernatural.
The story was really well done as well. There weren't any moments where the plot dragged; in fact, there was very little downtime in the story at all, which some might find to be annoying but I found refreshing. I liked that no time was wasted and even when you think things are over or the book should end, the continuation of the story made sense in the end and didn't feel unnecessary.
However, I did find that the epilogue was lacking; I would have liked to have known more about what happened after the events of the story, especially what happened between two of the characters given how much was leading up to something between them. It felt weird to have an epilogue where it didn't really tell us anything new or unknown from what happened in the story, and I wanted to know more about the other characters and not just Cas.
I also found Cas to be a little bit too conceited for me, although it did feel realistic to a degree. I just don't personally like characters (or real life people) who tend to be full of themselves, so even though it made sense, that did detract from my enjoyment of the book somewhat.
Overall this was a really well done story and I recommend it for anyone who likes supernatural YA. I will say that obviously this story deals with death given the premise, and there are some depictions of graphic violence, as well as abuse, so be aware of that before you read this if that might be a trigger for you. However, it is not unnecessary to the plot so it doesn't feel unwarranted.
