An older brother-and-sister pair decide to adopt a young boy to help with their farm chores and care for them in their old age, but due to a mix-up in communications, they get Anne, a fiery-tempered redheaded daydreamer with a big heart. They decided to keep her, and raise her to be a proper young lady. But- Anne is a magnet for mishaps! Through fights at school, a hair-dye accident, and the cherry-cordial incident, Anne's pure heart and determination see her through childhood and into her teenage years.
A funny, heartwarming book that still entertains young girls today, though it is old-fashioned.

Aging brother and sister Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert of Green Gables, Avonlea, Prince Edward Island, Canada wanted to adopt an orphan boy to help Matthew with the farm chores. Instead, they got Anne Shirley, a feisty, redheaded, nature-loving, somewhat vain, always entertaining little sprite of a wonder. Anne surprises but charms the Cuthberts with her lucrative overactive imagination and nonstop chatter.
It is not long before Anne wins the hearts of her whole town, and not just because she is bright, for the cute and mischievous Gilbert Blythewhom Anne refuses to ever speak to again after he teasingly called her Carrotsis a good brain, too. It is her unmatchable spirit and optimism in the face of adversary that conquers the coldest hearts&well, all except the unconquerable, Anne concedes, concerning the egotistical Josie Pye. But Anne, together with her bosom friend Diana Barry, Marilla, Matthew, the new ministers wife, Dianas grumpy old aunt, and yes, even Gilbert Blythe, proves that life is a magical, magical thing, no matter what it throws at you.
This is hands-down one of my favorite books of all time. There is no one like Anne in the history of literature who can match her spirit and ability to get into hilarious scrapes. This childrens classics will be loved by readers of ALL ages, guaranteed. It will make you laugh and cry and wish you were living in Annes world. I LOVE it!

You know those classics they make you read in school? The stodgy ones that are so dry you have to keep Diet Pepsi close at hand just to make them palatable? Well, ANNE OF GREEN GABLES is not that kind of classic. Its the kind that makes writers out of readers. The kind that inspires and lives on for generations despite the fact that its considered light reading and isnt nearly educational and literary enough to make the required reading lists at most schools.
And yes, its old&but its still appealing. Dont believe me? Check out the fourteen reader reviews right here at YABC:

So, why am I raving about ANNE OF GREEN GABLES? Because its baaaacccckkkk. The one hundred year anniversary edition has officially hit the shelves, complete with original artwork and a fascinating forward, written by L.M. Montgomerys own grandchildren.
Plus, its being simultaneously released with the new prequel, BEFORE GREEN GABLES, by Budge Wilson.
Is it worth checking out a classic? You decide!

I read this book when I was 11. I was at a friends garage sale after another friends birthday party, and the lady said we could have three items free. A few minutes later, I was walking out with six ANNE OF GREEN GABLES books.
I can relate to Anne (though I'm not an orphan) because she and I make a lot of funny, tragic and preventable mistakes. I'll say the characters are the best part. Montgomery gets you to care about (and laugh and cry with) Anne, Marilla, and Matthew, and that is what I love best about the book. I've read about four times so far!

I was in the mood for a little classic reading, so I quickly picked up an old favorite. I'm typically not a fan of "classics" in the general meaning, but when they are fun and light, as Anne very much is, I enjoy the book and speed through it. I hadn't visited this book in quite some time, so I was glad to read it again and remember everything I loved about Green Gables.
Anne of Green Gables was written by L.M. Montgomery back in the early 1900's. It begins with Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert making the decision to adopt a boy from an orphanage, in order to help with the work around the farm. When Matthew goes to retrieve the boy from the train station, he is shocked to discover 11 year old Anne. Red headed and blue eyed, Anne was sent for the Cuthbert's instead of a boy. After much discussion the couple decide to keep and raise Anne, without really knowing what they are in for.
Young Anne is incredibly curious, precocious, and an absolute motormouth. She has a tendency to make silly mistakes such as dying her hair green, sending her best friend home drunk off wine when she thought she was serving cordial, and falling off the roof. She tries very hard to please the Cuthbert's and as much trouble as she is, they grow to love her as their own child. The reader gets to experience Anne and her adventures over the course of 5 years, each more imaginative and adventurous than the last.
I really love this story and am looking forward to reading the sequels that were subsequently written. I've never read past Anne of Green Gables and believe this would be a good time to see where else the author takes the red head. This is a classic that will live on for many years, enjoyed by many.

I have read this book at least six times. I am from Prince Edward Island, so Anne is near and dear to my heart.
Anne is the kind of person that can overcome every obstacle and have fun while she is doing it. I liked the fact that she was determined to get an education when most girls were expected to get married and stay at home.
By the way, Prince Edward Island is a special place. Come visit!!

Exciting and fun to read, Anne Of Green Gables is one of my favourites! It is about an orphan who is adopted by Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert. They want a boy but due to a mistake they were sent Anne. After they get to know her, they decide to keep her with them. This is the beginning of Anne's happy life in Green Gables.
I liked the book mostly because of the funny character of Anne. She is very friendly, talks a lot and expresses her opinion freely, no matter wh o she is talking to. She also gets constantly into trouble because she is always day dreaming.
Anne of Green Gables is a wonderful book that touches your heart. For me, reading it was totally worth it!

Hi !
I seen a movie called in french "Le bonheur au bout du chemin", I don't know its title in english, but it was this story and I adored it.
It was something so comformtable (especially I want to be a writer, so I understand Anne), something really kind.
Could you tell me, is the movie conform to the book ?
